Job Summary:
Fiberglass technicians are responsible for fabricating fiberglass boat components applying polyester, vinyl ester and epoxy resin. The position requires knowledge of marine fiberglass techniques using epoxy, polyester resins, gelcoat, and fiberglass cloth. This position is detail orientated and involves crafting, cutting, trimming, sanding and grinding various surfaces and substrates. It is essential to have a complete understanding of drawings and blueprints to ensure the quality and structural integrity of parts being repaired and fabricated.
Responsibilities:
Performs structural and cosmetic fiberglass repairs and fabrication using epoxy and polyester resins.
Determines type of resin and catalyst and accurately measures amounts required for saturation and adhesion of material for the application.
Applies multiple layers of mat / fiber to surfaces assuring adhesion and repeating the process until the desired thickness, contour and strength is achieved.
Hand lays sections of saturated mat or cloth in place on molds, using proper tooling to ensure
placement of material is correct.
Uses brushes, rollers and squeegees as needed to smooth out air pockets, air bubbles and wrinkles to achieve full contact and proper adhesion.
Safely and properly create a vacuum bag barrier on fabricated parts and operate a vacuum pump to evacuate all air from the fabrication area.
Understands and actively participates in Environmental, Health & Safety responsibilities by following the company’s safety policy.
Qualifications:
Minimum 3 years of structural lay up of matting materials in addition to grinding and prep for repairs of
finished products required.
Knowledge of spraying and brushing of gel coatings is required.
Yacht paint and surface prep work is a plus. Carpentry skills and mold fabrication is a plus.
