Job Summary:
The Service Marine Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining various mechanical, propulsion, steering, hydraulic, and plumbing systems on vessels. This role requires expertise in troubleshooting and executing repairs on inboard and outboard engines, generators, cooling systems, fuel systems, and marine HVAC. The mechanic will also perform system installations, upgrades, and alignments to ensure optimal performance and safety of the vessel.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform routine maintenance, inspections, and diagnostics on marine engines, propulsion systems, and auxiliary systems.
- Troubleshoot and repair inboard and outboard engines, transmissions, and running gear.
- Install, repair, and maintain hydraulic systems, including steering, trim tabs, and stabilizers.
- Conduct shaft, propeller, and rudder alignments, removals, and installations.
- Remove and replace cutlass bearings, shaft seals, and struts.
- Perform rigging and lifting operations for the removal and installation of marine components.
- Install, service, and repair marine plumbing systems, including freshwater, greywater, and blackwater systems.
- Perform fuel system maintenance, including tank inspections, fuel line replacements, and filter servicing.
- Ensure all work complies with industry safety standards and regulations.
Qualifications:
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; ABYC, technical certification in marine mechanics, or a related field preferred.
- Experience: Minimum 1 year of experience in marine or mechanical systems.
- Strong knowledge of marine propulsion systems, including diesel and gas engines.
- Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing hydraulic and mechanical steering systems.
- Ability to work on running gear, including shafts, struts, and propellers.
- Understanding of plumbing systems, seacocks, and through-hull fittings.
- Skilled in using diagnostic tools and repair equipment.
- Familiarity with marine A/C and refrigeration systems.
- Ability to work in confined spaces and lift heavy components safely.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:
- Work is performed in a marine and industrial environment with exposure to noise, dust, fumes, and varying weather conditions.
- May involve working in confined spaces, at heights, or in awkward positions.
- Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
- Requires frequent standing, walking, bending, climbing, and lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Requires the use of hand tools, power tools, and equipment.
- Occasional overtime and weekend work may be necessary.
